About Youghal

Youghal is a handsome walled heritage town at the mouth of the River Blackwater in east Cork, and its Front Strand is the start of a three-mile run of sand that continues through Claycastle to Redbarn — all linked by a coastal eco-boardwalk.

The Front Strand and Claycastle carry Blue Flags, and the long, gently shelving sands make this one of the best family swimming stretches on the south coast.

Swimming & safety

Youghal is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol 10:30–19:00 (Cork County Council): from 30–31 May, weekends in June including the bank holiday, daily in July and August, and the first two weekends of September. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Youghal before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There are car parks at the Front Strand and Claycastle, with public toilets at all three beaches, and you can even park on the sand at Redbarn. The eco-boardwalk links the beaches for an easy walk, and Youghal town — with its clock gate, walls and cafés — is right behind.
