About Whiterocks

The White Rocks is a two-mile stretch of sand running east from Portrush beneath dramatic white limestone cliffs sculpted into arches and caves.

The waves that roll in here make it a Blue Flag beach much loved by surfers, bodyboarders and sea-kayakers, as well as walkers exploring the cliff formations.

Swimming & safety

Whiterocks is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the bathing season (roughly June to September), with RNLI lifeguards on the main strands. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Whiterocks before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's a cliff-top car park with steps down to the sand, and RNLI lifeguards patrol in season. The exposed break is excellent for surfing but means swimmers should heed the flags and the day's conditions. Dunluce Castle stands on the cliffs just along the coast.

Nearby

From Whiterocks, Dunluce Castle, Portrush and the Giant's Causeway are close by.
