Tyrella — blue flag dune beach in Co. Down.
About Tyrella
Tyrella is a flat, wide, two-kilometre beach enclosed within a complex of dunes on the southern shore of Dundrum Bay in County Down, looking across to the Mourne Mountains.
A Blue Flag beach with firm, safe sands, it's a relaxed family strand where you can even drive onto the beach in the designated area.
Swimming & safety
Tyrella is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the bathing season (roughly June to September), with RNLI lifeguards on the main strands. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.
Tides & conditions
The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Tyrella before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.
Getting there & facilities
There's a beach car park (drive-on parking in the marked area) with seasonal facilities, and RNLI lifeguards patrol in summer. The enclosed dune setting keeps it sheltered and safe for families.
