About Sandymount Strand

Sandymount Strand is the great flat sweep of sand on the south side of Dublin Bay, immortalised in James Joyce's Ulysses. At low water the sea withdraws almost to the horizon, leaving a shimmering expanse of rippled sand beneath the Poolbeg chimneys.

It's more a walking-and-views strand than a swimming beach — the very shallow gradient means the water is a long way out and slow to deepen.

Swimming & safety

Sandymount is not a lifeguarded swimming beach and the huge tidal range means the sea can come in quickly across the flats — people have been caught out walking too far. It's best enjoyed as a walk; if you do swim, only around high water and check the bathing-water status, which can dip after heavy rain.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Sandymount Strand before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

Reached on foot from Sandymount village (Sandymount DART station) with a promenade and street parking behind the strand. Cafés and shops are in the village a short walk away.

Nearby
