About Portstewart Strand

Portstewart Strand is two miles of firm golden sand backed by a towering wall of dunes, running from the edge of Portstewart town toward the mouth of the River Bann.

Cared for by the National Trust and flying a Blue Flag, it's one of the few beaches in Northern Ireland you can still drive onto and park right on the sand — a classic Causeway Coast day out.

Swimming & safety

Portstewart Strand is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the bathing season (roughly June to September), with RNLI lifeguards on the main strands. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Portstewart Strand before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

Drive onto the beach and park on the sand (a National Trust charge applies); there's a visitor facility and the dunes hold a rich nature reserve, so keep to the marked routes. RNLI lifeguards patrol in season, and the town of Portstewart with its promenade is close by.
