About Portrush West Strand

Portrush is the bustling seaside capital of the Causeway Coast, a peninsula town with beaches on both sides — the long West Strand curving toward Portstewart and the East Strand running out toward the White Rocks.

Both are Blue Flag beaches, and with Royal Portrush golf links, the amusements of Barry's and the Giant's Causeway just up the road, it's the north coast's liveliest resort.

Swimming & safety

Portrush West Strand is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the bathing season (roughly June to September), with RNLI lifeguards on the main strands. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Portrush West Strand before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's parking around the town and both strands, with the full range of resort facilities — cafés, amusements and toilets. RNLI lifeguards patrol the main strands in season. The West Strand is the gentler swim; the East Strand and White Rocks pick up more surf.
