About Murlough

Murlough is a vast five-mile beach of golden sand backed by Ireland's first nature reserve — a 6,000-year-old dune system — nestling beneath the Mourne Mountains at Dundrum Bay.

Managed by the National Trust and Blue Flag, its sweeping sands and strong winds make it a favourite for walking, swimming and, when the breeze is up, surfing and kite-surfing.

Swimming & safety

Murlough is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the bathing season (roughly June to September), with RNLI lifeguards on the main strands. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Murlough before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's a National Trust car park with boardwalk paths through the fragile dunes to the beach — keep to them. RNLI lifeguards patrol in season. The views to the Mournes are unbeatable, and Newcastle's promenade is a short drive.
