About Duncannon

Duncannon sits on the Hook Peninsula in south Wexford, a sandy beach beneath a star-shaped 16th-century fort, looking out over the mouth of Waterford Harbour.

It regained its Blue Flag in 2026 after a long gap, and its firm, wide sands — famous locally for a summer sandcastle festival — are a fine, sheltered family swim.

Swimming & safety

Duncannon is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the summer (Wexford County Council): weekends in June, then daily in July and August. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Duncannon before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's parking in the village, which has pubs and cafés, and Duncannon Fort above the beach is well worth a visit. The Hook Head lighthouse, one of the world's oldest working lighthouses, is a short drive on.

Nearby

From Duncannon, Duncannon Fort, Hook Head lighthouse and the Ballyhack–Passage East ferry are close by.
