About Donabate

Donabate's Balcarrick Beach is a broad, dune-backed strand on the Fingal coast north of Dublin, quieter than the city beaches and framed by golf links and the Rogerstown and Broadmeadow estuaries on either side of the peninsula.

A Blue Flag beach, it's a favourite for long walks, family swims and birdwatching around the neighbouring estuaries.

Swimming & safety

Donabate is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the summer (Fingal / Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown / Dublin City councils): weekends in June, then daily in July and August. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Donabate before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's a car park behind the dunes at Balcarrick, and Donabate has its own DART station a little inland. Facilities are modest, so bring what you need. The dunes are fragile — stick to the paths.

Nearby

From Donabate, the Newbridge House demesne, the estuaries of Rogerstown and Broadmeadow and the beach at Portrane are close by.
