About Dollymount Strand

Dollymount Strand runs for some five kilometres along Bull Island, a low sandy island in Dublin Bay reached by the wooden bridge at Clontarf. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere and nature reserve — dunes, saltmarsh and mudflats alive with wading birds.

It's the big open-sky beach of the northside, wide enough for walkers, swimmers, kite-surfers and kite-flyers alike, with the cranes of Dublin Port and the Poolbeg chimneys framing the view.

Swimming & safety

Dollymount is lifeguarded in summer and is a designated bathing water. The sand is flat and the tide retreats a long way, so swimming is best around high tide; take care of the channel currents near the Bull Wall and check water-quality notices after heavy rain.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Dollymount Strand before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

You can drive right onto the strand via the causeway and the wooden bridge, with parking along the beach; it's also reachable by bus from the city. There are traditional bathing shelters near the Star of the Sea statue. Facilities are limited, so bring what you need.

Nearby

From Dollymount Strand, the Bull Wall and its shelters, Clontarf's seafront promenade and St Anne's Park are all close by.
