About Cranfield

Cranfield is County Down's southernmost beach, a warm curve of sand at the mouth of Carlingford Lough looking across to the Cooley Mountains.

Its sheltered, south-facing aspect and gently shelving sand — plus a Blue Flag — make it a firm family favourite, popular with the caravan parks that line the shore.

Swimming & safety

Cranfield is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol through the bathing season (roughly June to September), with RNLI lifeguards on the main strands. Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Cranfield before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's parking behind the beach and seasonal facilities, with RNLI lifeguards in summer. The sheltered water is good for families; Kilkeel harbour and the Mourne coast are close by.
