About Bunmahon

Bunmahon is a five-kilometre sandy beach on the Copper Coast, backed by dunes and sheltered by tall cliffs at either end that hold the legacy of the area's 19th-century copper mines.

A Blue Flag beach with gently breaking waves, it's one of the best places in the south-east to learn to surf, and a striking spot for a swim beneath the geopark's cliffs.

Swimming & safety

Bunmahon is a Blue Flag beach for 2026 — certified water quality, good facilities and lifeguard cover through the bathing season. Lifeguards patrol generally at weekends in June and daily in July and August (Waterford City & County Council). Swim within the flagged area when they're on duty, and mind the tide, currents and any offshore wind.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Bunmahon before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's parking by the beach with seasonal toilets, and the Copper Coast Geopark visitor centre nearby tells the story of the old mines. The gentle waves suit beginner surfers; check with the lifeguards on bigger days.
