About Ballyliffin (Pollan Bay)

Pollan Strand at Ballyliffin is a wild, spectacular sweep of dune-backed sand on the Inishowen Peninsula, with the rocky little island of Glashedy standing offshore and the championship links of Ballyliffin Golf Club along its dunes.

It is one of the most dramatic beaches in the north — but a beach for walking and views rather than swimming.

Swimming & safety

Take care: Pollan Strand is not a designated bathing beach and is known for strong currents and undertow — swimming here is dangerous and not advised. Enjoy it as a walking beach, and for a swim head to a lifeguarded strand nearby.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Ballyliffin (Pollan Bay) before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's parking by the strand and the golf club. The village of Ballyliffin has hotels and cafés, and the beach is superb for a bracing walk beneath Glashedy Island — just keep out of the water.

Nearby

From Ballyliffin (Pollan Bay), Ballyliffin village, Malin Head and the Inishowen 100 drive are close by.
