About Ballycotton

Ballycotton is a working fishing village on a rocky headland in east Cork, famous less for a single strand than for its internationally acclaimed cliff walk and the black-and-white lighthouse on the island offshore.

When the tide is out you can walk for miles between little beaches beneath the cliffs — this is a place for rock-pooling, walking and wild sea views as much as swimming.

Swimming & safety

Ballycotton is not a lifeguarded swimming beach — its shore is rocky and tidal. Take real care near the cliffs and the water, keep to the marked cliff path, and check the tide before venturing onto the beaches below.

Tides & conditions

The beach changes through the day with the tide, and swimming can shift from easy to lively as the wind and swell get up. Check the live tide, wind and sea-temperature page for Ballycotton before you travel — you can scrub forward to any date to plan a swim.

Getting there & facilities

There's parking in the village and at the start of the cliff walk, with pubs and a couple of cafés. The five-kilometre cliff walk to Ballyandreen is the highlight; boat trips run to the lighthouse island in summer.

Nearby

From Ballycotton, the Ballycotton cliff walk, Ballyandreen beach and Shanagarry are close by.
